An Epic Zero Waste Wedding

An epic Zero waste wedding

Epic Renewal's cofounders, Tess and Baba, had a blast planning and hosting their own zero waste wedding this past June in Rhode Island. Working with a number of amazing local small businesses around RI, they tied the knot with their loves ones and only five pounds of landfill waste.

The details

Stationery: Invitations were printed on plantable seed paper, and shipped in an envelope made from recycled paper.

The Wedding Dress: The dress was sourced secondhand, cutting down on manufacturing and distribution waste from the apparel industry. After the wedding, a local natural dye artist will help transform it into something new.

Bar: All single-use bar elements were swapped for reusable ones - straws, napkins, and glassware live on as part of Epic Renewal's rental offerings. Thanks to Cork & Coaster for making the bar fabulous with local wine and beer!

Food Sourcing: The majority of the food served was seasonal, sourced from local farms, and thoughtfully prepared by local chef and caterer, 401 Gourmet.

Food Recovery: Local food recovery partners Rescuing Leftover Cuisine, and their volunteer Dana Siles (also the photographer!) found a great home for 83 meals worth of excess edible food.

Composting: Epic Renewal provided compost collection for back-of-house food preparation, as well as any food scraps, wilted cut florals, and paper towels from the event. In total, 53 pounds of compostable material was kept out of landfill.

Cocktail Napkins: Instead of single-use napkins, washable, reusable ones were crafted with offcut linen scraps that would otherwise be wasted, sourced from a home goods manufacturer.

Event Furniture: The ceremony furniture was homemade at Epic Renewal, using locally sourced and sustainably harvested ash wood from Maisey’s Tree Farm, which stewards 23 acres of native woods and offers nature-based educational experiences.

Favors: Favors featured reusable packaging and natural ingredients crafted by local small businesses - Teas from Black Leaf Tea & Culture Shop, Seasonal Honey from Hurricane Hill Farm.
