Rhode Island is proud to host the second annual Lil' Rhody Compost Week! 

This week-long series of site visits and workshops highlights our unique, collaborative, and creative composting ecosystem across the state. The week culminates on Friday, May 8th, with our Compost Celebration - a community gathering featuring art, activities, food, and connection, all while celebrating the vital links between soil, food, water, and our collective well-being through the magic of compost.

This community gathering loaded with activities, art, food, exhibits, a gift raffle, and more celebrates the vital links between soil, food, water, and our collective well-being through the magic of compost.

Community & Partners

Black Earth Compost provides curbside compost service for households, businesses, municipalities, supermarkets, colleges, and schools across eastern MA, RI and NH.

Bootstrap Compost provides clean and convenient compost collection in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, focused on community engagement and education on the importance of composting in an urban setting.

CET is a regional nonprofit, operates on the front lines of climate action by helping people and businesses decarbonize through waste reduction, energy efficiency, and electrification. With funding from federal, state and private partners, we can provide no-cost technical assistance to RI businesses to help implement programs and strategies to prevent wasted food, donate surplus food, and divert food scrap from the landfill.

For over 45 years Earth Care Farm has been producing high quality farm-made compost that gardeners and landscapers have come to rely upon to enrich their soil naturally.

Epic Renewal works to build a zero waste world by keeping food waste out of landfills and using it to build healthy soils and nurture equitable and resilient food systems. Specializing in zero waste events and commercial services, Epic works to empower its clients to host stunning events and run beautiful spaces without the waste.

Harvest Cycle is Groundwork RI’s community composting program. They use bicycles to collect food scraps from residents and small businesses and transform them into high quality compost that they then redistribute back to their members and other urban growers in the community. They emphasize education, empowerment, and economic opportunity through integrating Groundwork RI’s youth and adult job training programs into our composting operations.

Providence Garden Works is an urban home composting and gardening business that provides installation, training and technical support to families, composters and gardeners. They are advocates and educators, committed to helping build healthy families and communities by harnessing the composting and garden life cycles at home.

The OpenDoors reentry program uses a holistic approach to support people as they prepare to leave prison, return home, and stabilize in the community. Open Doors has on-site resident-powered compost processing and a large vegetable garden with free farmers markets on Friday mornings for residents and neighbors. The site is operated by resident graduates from Garden Time’s Green ReEntry.

Founded in 2013, the ReMix Organics Company is working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from landfills and to optimize the efficiency and sustainability of organic waste transport. By partnering with regional farms and anaerobic digesters, we put organic waste to work creating high-quality soil amendments and renewable energy.

The RI School Recycling Project is active in 35 schools and expect to reach half of all schools in Rhode Island by 2027 and all schools by 2030. They focus on food waste in RI schools – and how to reduce, recover and recycle it.

WasteNaut Consulting empowers communities to make decisions that directly have a positive impact on local environments. Through approaches rooted in systems-thinking, advocacy and environmental behavior change techniques, they create individualized sustainability plans for our clients, aligning environmental goals with organizational missions and values.

Worm Lab offers engaging, hands-on sessions that introduce students to the underground world of worms and the power of vermicomposting. From simple demonstrations to fully functioning worm farms, these offerings are designed to meet your classroom's goals and bring sustainability education to life!
